A Note From Our Founder

our founder and his child, who he taught coding

Hi, I’m Eric Fredrickson. I taught myself to code by writing my own video games as a kid because my parents could afford a Commodore 64, but not the disk drive, and I really wanted to play games. So I wrote my own. Fast forward a bunch of years, and I found myself the father of an 8-year-old daughter blessed with artistic creativity. Inspired by this video, I thought to myself, I should teach her how to code.

Well, we both had SO much FUN, I decided to offer a class for her Girl Scout troop, which became summer camps. Finally, it became after-school classes, and I started hiring people to teach using my method, and 8,000+ kids later, this non-profit is the result. Our goal is simple: to be the best teachers of coding for kids in the world, so YOUR child can have the same great experience mine did. With coding and persistence, your child can do almost anything.

FAQs

How much do classes cost?

We do our best to keep our classes affordable. But to hire the best teachers AND train them well costs a lot of money. This is a problem, because from the beginning, our core value has been to never turn a child away just because their parent(s) lack money. So far, we’ve been able to achieve that via “Pay what you can” scholarships. There’s no paperwork, it’s strictly “scouts honor”. Email parent support. A real human will reply and we’ll work something out

Does my child need a computer to take a class?

No! Whether in-person at a school or online, our nonprofit is committed to providing Chromebooks to kids who want to take our coding classes.

What if I don’t live in Seattle?

No problem! Online is available now, and in-person classes might be possible, if you reach out.

Ever heard of Zoom? We are the OG Zoom coding teachers. Eric Fredrickson literally invented the practice of teaching kids to code over Zoom, 2 years before the covid pandemic. True! Our whole staff then spent 2.5 years ONLY teaching online. So yeah, we’re really good at it. We still offer both group and private tutoring online, on a limited basis

In-person classes in Hawaii, PA or elsewhere? If you’re connected to a PTA or School in another state, reach out! We’ve been doing this so long that we have ex-employees living all over the country. Some have 3, 7, or even 10 years experience working for us. A lot of them tell us they really miss teaching the occasional after school class, and they ALL miss working for us.

We miss them too! They are Legends around here! So why not bring us back together so your kid can learn coding after school next quarter, from a level 7 teacher? We think outside the box around here, so literally anything’s possible! We’d love to talk.  Email parentsupport@coding4kids.org.
